  Dogfighting Investigations: Conduit to Drugs, Gangs, and Guns

Nationally recognized dogfighting investigations expert Sergeant David R. Hunt of the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office (Columbus, Ohio) shares his experience and expertise as a dogfighting investigator during this 8-hour course. 

Gang and street crimes investigators, narcotics detectives, patrol officers, animal control officers and prosecutors:  please do not miss this training opportunity!  Topics covered include:

• The connection between dogfighting and other felony and misdemeanor crimes such as gang activity and weapons and drug crimes
• Profiles of a dogfighter from the street fighter to the hobbyists to the professional
• Gang involvement in dogfighting rings
• Investigative and surveillance techniques
• Indicia of dogfighting rings
• Search warrant execution and evidence handling including information on dogs as evidence
• Possible defense tactics in the courtroom
• Follow up work with zoning, the health department, veterinaries and animal control
• An overview of federal animal fighting codes
• An overview of cockfighting

About the instructor:

Hunt is a 27-year veteran of the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office (Columbus, Ohio) and has been assigned to their Special Investigations Unit for the past 15 years.  He is the lead detective on all gambling and dogfighting investigations in Franklin County and is a court-recognized expert on dogfighting and illegal gambling.  Sgt. Hunt has received training on dogfighting from numerous sources including the Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine and the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.  His writings have been published in “The Buckeye Sheriff” magazine and the “FBI National Academy Associate” magazine.
