Creating and Maintaining Excellence in Your Police Agency
8 hours DCJS in-service credit (4 legal, 2 cultural diversity and 2 career development)
From the inception of law enforcement to the present, a series of pivotal moments have had an enduring influence on the public’s perception of police. Public perception often influences media coverage, jury pools, and ultimately public policy.
This dynamic 8-hour course is designed to help participants promote and maintain excellence among personnel in their agency. Participants will learn how to assist their agency in minimizing and managing citizen complaints, as well as strategies for building effective partnerships within their communities.
Instruction will focus on the importance of preparation, articulation, and documentation for officers before, during and after three specific police/citizen encounters: consensual; investigative detention; and arrests. In addition, participants will examine bias-based policing issues, communication tactics regarding interdiction stops, traffic violations, and pre-textual stops.
The course culminates with a discussion of the fundamentals of communication bridging between generations and cultures, as well as proactive policing in minority communities.
Note: The cultural diversity component of this class can be customized to address the demographics of your local jurisdiction.
