Understanding the Dynamics of Domestic Violence: A Strategic Response from our Criminal Justice System

8 hours VA DCJS career development in-service credit

Participants will discover how they can enhance officer and victim safety; improve police response; increase offender accountability; and identify and employ previously untapped resources in the fight against domestic violence. Some of the topics addressed in the course include the dynamics of domestic violence and the “power and control wheel,” using collaborative approaches to domestic violence, determining the primary aggressor, understanding protective orders and “full faith and credit,” evidence gathering, and safety planning.

This class is designed to encourage student participation through videos, group and individual exercises, and open, frank discussions concerning domestic violence. Participants will view PowerPoint presentations and video vignettes and then, by way of the Group Response System, a cordless keypad allowing for complete anonymity, provide their honest opinions on the questions posed. This is a guaranteed attention-grabber and fosters fantastic discussions! VCPI recommends this course for all law enforcement personnel, domestic-violence-victim advocates, probation and parole officers, police chaplains, prosecuting attorneys, and those affiliated with domestic-violence programs.

Please note:
VCPI no longer offers the 3-day Community Policing to Reduce Domestic Violence course.  Information covered in this 8-hour format has been restructured and updated from the 3-day version.  It would serve as an excellent refresher course for those who may have taken the full 3-day course in the past.

"Excellent course. I have attended dozens of DV trainings over the years, and this was the best by far. The instructors, visuals, attention getters and class participation exercises made this course exceptional. If you can keep officers attention, then you are doing it right."

"This was one of the most interesting and helpful classes in my 25 years."
